Magic 10C Teal Weekly Highlights Summer 2011

Magic 10C Teal Team

Watsonville Strawberry Jam - July 16th and 17th

To wrap up an exciting and memorable summer season, the Magic 10C Teal journeyed over the hill to Watsonville for the 2011 Strawberry Jam Tournament.  This event features a unique format with teams playing twice on Saturday for seeding and then participating in division play Sunday to determine winners at each level. The Teal went 2-0 on Saturday, allowing only a single run to earn the number 1 seed.  Sunday action began with a victory over the San Ramon Stompers Blue in a rematch from Incline Village, setting up a battle with the San Ramon Stompers B/C team for the tournament championship.

Saturday's first game began at 10am with the Magic facing the host Pajaro Valley Tremblers. Savanna Smith started for the Magic and pitched a scoreless first inning striking out 3 Tremblers.  The Magic then took their at bats, sending 20 hitters to the plate and scoring 14 runs in the team's second highest offensive inning of the summer season.  Ava Currie, the Teal leadoff hitter, started the frame with a single and quickly stole 2nd and 3rd.  Remi Snouffer followed Currie and was hit by pitch placing runners on 1st and 3rd.  Savanna Smith then ripped a triple driving in 2 runs and the Magic were off to a fast start. A walk to Amber Kelly and her subsequent steal of 2nd base was followed by a sharp line drive base hit up the middle by Rachel Ice-Crespo to drive in another Magic run.  That brought up Sara Chiala who ripped an almost identical line drive single over 2nd base to plate Ice-Crespo. Maddie Moore then walked as did Rachel An for the Magic, loading the bases.  Currie stepped up for her second at bat of the inning and also drew a run scoring walk. Remi Snouffer was again hit by pitch, and she notched an RBI for the effort while trying to remove the apparent invisible target that had been placed on her by the Tremblers pitcher. Savanna Smith then walked for yet another Magic RBI.  Lauren Osborne singled and drove in a run for her team and the Magic would not be stopped.  Amber Kelly reached via walk and the Magic Teal had its 9th run of the inning, but they were not done yet.  Ice-Crespo again singled as did Chiala with both eventually scoring.  Maddie Moore had another RBI as did Rachel An in the big first inning.  Cecilia Wolthausen pinch ran and scored for the Magic with all the kids including Kiley Haberkorn and Stacey Boboricken enjoying the action!  Lauren Osborne relieved Smith and pitched the 2nd and 3rd innings for the Magic.  She struck out 2 Tremblers in the 2nd and was supported by her defense when Rachel An made a nice catch to close the inning.  Osborne followed up with 2 more strikeouts in the 3rd and a fielded a ground ball back to pitcher to finish off the Tremblers and end the game.  Magic won by a final score of 14-0.

Saturday's second game was played under spectacular blue skies as the Magic Teal faced the Crushers from Cabrillo.  The Magic Teal's sister team had faced Cabrillo at NorCal's so the Teal had a good scouting report entering the game.  The Magic again had Savanna Smith pitching as the team looked to go 2-0 and achieve a high seed for Sunday division play.  Smith struck out the first Crushers hitter but a throwing error allowed the next hitter to reach.  A stolen base was followed by a base hit and the Crushers held an early 1-0 lead before Smith finished up the 1st by striking out the side.  Magic hitters were up to the test facing a capable pitcher from Cabrillo.  Ava Currie launched the Magic rally by drawing a base on balls.  She immediately stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on an RBI ground out by Savanna Smith.  With 2 outs Lauren Osborne worked a walk and she too stole 2nd and 3rd to setup another Magic run.  Amber Kelly walked as did both Rachel Ice-Crespo and Sara Chiala to drive in Osborne with the 2nd Magic run of the inning.  The game moved to the 2nd inning with Smith continuing her excellent pitching.  A ground out and two strikeouts made quick work of the Crushers, and the Magic were quick to mount another scoring threat.  With 1 out Ava Currie reached via base on balls and she stole two more bases.  With Currie on 3rd, Savanna Smith crushed a line drive up the middle that just missed the Crushers pitcher, thankfully avoiding the girl's forehead.  The ball shot into center field driving in Currie, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Magic.  Smith stole 2nd and 3rd and Lauren Osborne came to the plate.  She worked a walk from the Cabrillo pitcher and Smith scored via wild pitch in the process.  Osborne then stole 2nd and 3rd but was left there as the inning ended.  Savanna Smith pitched a strong 3rd inning with only a walk allowed before striking out the side again!  Smith also worked quickly through the 4th inning as a ground ball to Osborne was the first out and then back-to-back strikeouts finished the game as the Magic loaded the bases before time expired.  A 4-1 victory for the Magic had the team at 2-0 on Saturday and ultimately seeded #1 for division play on Sunday.

Under sunny yet blustery conditions on Sunday, the number 1 seeded Magic played its semifinal game at 1pm against the San Ramon Stompers Blue.  The Magic had defeated the Stompers a week before and made quick work of the team again.  Savanna Smith pitched for the Teal and struck out 3 in the opening inning.  The Magic hitters went down in order and the game was on.  Smith again pitched great in the 2nd inning, and the Magic were up to the task on offense with Lauren Osborne getting things started for the Magic, reaching base when she was hit by a pitch.  Osborne immediately stole 2nd and 3rd with Amber Kelly at the plate.  Kelly too was hit by pitch, and she quickly stole 2nd setting up Magic runners in scoring position with nobody out.  Rachel Ice-Crespo walked and the Stompers pitcher was rattled, ultimately walking Sara Chiala to drive in Osborne for the 1st Magic score of the day.  Kiley Haberkorn ran for Chiala and Maddie Moore batted for the Magic.  Moore hit a hard ground ball to 2nd base that drove in a Magic run and the score was 2-0.  Cecilia Wolthausen hit next for the Magic and drew a walk scoring Ice-Crespo for the 3rd Magic run of the inning and the Teal were up 3-0.  In the 3rd inning Smith again threw great striking out 2 more Crushers, and the Magic exerted more pressure at the plate.  A walk to Amber Kelly and base hit by Rachel Ice-Crespo was followed by a terrific bunt single by Sara Chiala.  The Magic had their 4th run and scored twice more to move ahead 6-0.  The Stompers were able to score on a 4th inning walk and fielder's choice but the Magic defense played well and Smith struck out 2 more Stompers to wrap up a Magic victory.

The late Sunday tournament championship game had the Magic facing another San Ramon Stompers team.  The game began late and the Magic faced a quality test to win another title.  The team looked to win consecutive championships as they wrapped up their summer season in Watsonville.  The Magic strangely opened as the visitor (even though they were the number 1 seed) with Savanna Smith hitting a 2-out single and stealing 2nd and 3rd.  Lauren Osborne hit next for the Magic, sending a sharp ground ball up the line and apparently headed into right field.  The ball struck the first base bag and then the chin of the Stompers 1st baseman.  Although shaken the defender was able to control the ball and step on the bag, ending the Magic scoring threat.  Savanna Smith pitched for the Magic as the game went to the bottom of the 1st.  An error on the ground ball from the Stompers leadoff hitter placed a runner at 1st and the Stompers then stole 2nd and 3rd.  Smith struck out the next hitter but a productive out via a ground ball to Magic 3rd baseman Ava Currie resulted in the first Stompers taking a 1-0 lead.  The Magic attempted to strike back in the 2nd inning when Rachel Ice-Crespo was hit by pitch and Sara Chiala reached when her sacrifice bunt was misplayed by San Ramon.  The Magic were in business with runners at 2nd and 3rd and only 1 out.  Unfortunately in the first of several missed opportunities by the Magic, two consecutive strikeouts ended the threat without a run scoring.  Smith pitched well for the Magic in the 2nd inning, allowing a lead off single but ending the inning without the runner scoring by striking out 2 Stompers.  In the Magic 3rd inning Ava Currie began a rally by walking and stealing 2nd base.  But again the strikeout and pop up combination haunted the Magic.  With 2 outs Lauren Osborne's ground ball up the middle was nicely played by the Stompers shortstop and an accurate throw ended the inning with the Magic down 1-0 and wondering if their hard luck would continue.  In the Stompers 3rd inning the team from San Ramon struck with 1 out as their lead off hitter hit a looping double down the right field line.  A stolen base and ground out allowed the Stompers to go ahead 2-0.  The Magic tried valiantly again to muster a threat as the 4th inning rally began with 1 out.  Rachel Ice-Crespo reached 1st and Sara Chiala followed with a bunt single.  Magic stolen bases moved runners into scoring position and the opportunity to tie the game was only a base hit away.  Unfortunately the Teal again ran into hard luck as a pop up and strikeout ended the uprising.  The game moved to the bottom of the 4th and Smith did a great job of stifling the Stompers.  In the Magic 5th inning the Teal went down in order and hopes appeared dim.  But the kids refused to give up.  Savanna Smith pitched well all tournament and finished by striking out the side in the 5th; however, a throwing error allowed a 3rd run to score before she could record the final out.  The Stompers were now up 3 and the Magic had one final at bat.  A ground out to 3rd base started the Magic 6th inning but the team then started a rally when Amber Kelly reached via base hit and another hit by Rachel Ice-Crespo put 2 runners on base.  Sara Chiala then placed a terrific bunt down and an errant throw allowed Kelly to score.  Maddie Moore hit next and her ground ball sent teammate Rachel Ice-Crespo towards home plate.  The Magic nearly scored again but Ice-Crespo was tagged out at home plate on a close play.  The Magic were down 3-1 but had the tying runners on base. Sadly with two outs they could not get another base hit and the game ended 3-1 in favor of San Ramon.  While not the victory the team had strived to achieve, a 2nd place finish was still outstanding and the kids very much enjoyed their final tournament weekend together in Watsonville.

The Magic Teal ended their summer tournament season with a final record of 23-10-2.  It was a tremendous success, much fun was had by all the kids on the team, and hearty congratulations go out to the players and coaches for their wonderful play!

Incline Village Lake Tahoe - July 9th and 10th

The Magic 10C Teal won the championship game of the Incline Village Lake Tahoe tournament on Sunday by a final score of 5-2 in the event's Silver Division.  The Magic defeated the Newark Dynamite to wrap up an undefeated Sunday with 3 victories.  Congratulations to all the Magic 10C Teal players and coaches on a tremendous result in beautiful Lake Tahoe!  A great weekend of play in the team's penultimate tournament of the summer.

A road trip is always fun and exciting. But when one adds in a dramatic softball tournament championship, numerous team parties, and a site as spectacular as Lake Tahoe, you truly have an unforgettable memory!  The Magic 10C Teal ventured into the Sierras for an alpine softball celebration and boy did they have reason to celebrate.

Saturday pool play action began with a game against Magic rival the Almaden Lightning. Lauren Osborne took the ball for the Magic at 8am. She and her Teal teammates were ready to battle the kids from Almaden as well as the many pesky mosquitoes that wanted a front row seat for the action. In the Almaden half of the 1st inning, Osborne established excellent command and location immediately, striking out the first 2 Lightning and recording the last out on a ground ball to shortstop. The Magic came out aggressive in their first at bats, scoring 5 runs to set the tone. Ava Currie, Remi Snouffer, and Lauren Osborne were all hit by pitch. Not worrying about a few bumps and bruises the base runners all moved up on a Maddie Moore ground ball that was mishandled and Rachel Ice-Crespo's walk also drove in a Magic run. Sara Chiala's fielder's choice drove in a run as did a base hit by Saylor Perez. In the 2nd inning Osborne again retired the side in order, this time on 3 consecutive strikeouts. Her Magic teammates continued the pressure when Remi Snouffer singled with 1 out and Amber Kelly walked. Moore was hit by pitch joining a long line of Magic batters that were plunked this day, and Ice-Crespo then walked scoring Snouffer.  The Magic were up 7-0 and in great shape to claim the first game of pool play. The top of the 3rd had the Lightning again stymied by Osborne's ability to change speeds and execute all her pitches.  She struck out the first 2 Lightning and set down her ninth consecutive batter on a ground ball to 2nd base. The Magic couldn't muster any offense this inning, but going into the 4th inning the 7-0 lead provided plenty of cushion. Osborne recorded a 10th straight out on a ball to shortstop in the 4th, but a pop up then landed just out of reach at 1st base ended the perfect game bid and the Lightning finally had something to cheer about on offense. A subsequent bunt hit placed 2 runners on base, but that didn't bother Lauren Osborne as she efficiently struck out the next 2 Lightning hitters to end the threat. Magic Teal extended its lead in the 4th with a leadoff walk by Currie and consecutive stolen bases. Osborne lined a single up the middle and stole second with the Magic going up 8-1. The Lightning hit in their half of the 5th inning but went down in order with a strikeout, ground out, and another strikeout to wrap up the Magic win.  Osborne struck out 11 Lightning batters, walking none notching a win for the 10C Teal.  Next up, the Magic faced Newark Dynamite.

Amber Kelly started for the Magic in game 2 against an aggressive base running team from Newark. In what proved to be very tough conditions in the heat and high altitude, the Magic defense was not up to its normal caliber of good play allowing the Dynamite to strike early. Kelly struck out the first hitter but a dropped 3rd strike had a runner safe at first. A single was followed by another strikeout. Kelly looked in great shape when the next batter flied out to right field; however, that missed opportunity early allowed an extra Dynamite to bat. The result was a 2-RBI hit and the Magic trailed 2-0. Magic hitters immediately struck for 2 runs in their first at bats with Currie reaching on an error and Snouffer too reaching on a miscue. Osborne walked to load the bases. Kelly lined to 2nd for an out but her teammate Maddie Moore singled to drive in a pair. Rachel Ice-Crespo walked but the Magic inning ended with the game tied 2-2. The Dynamite were not satisfied with a tie ballgame and began the 2nd with a base hit, walk, and double to plate 2 runs. A nice play by Kelly and subsequent strikeout had the Magic in position to limit the damage until a hit by pitch and base hit scored 2 more and the Newark lead was 6-2. Magic bats were quiet going into the 3rd when the elements finally did in the Magic. The Dynamite tallied 6 more times and the game was out of reach at 12-2. However, the Dynamite would soon learn that it was not good to under estimate the Magic.

Game 3 had the Magic facing the Campbell Crush with Lauren Osborne starting her second game of the day in the Tahoe event. The Magic were visitors and pushed across an early run when Remi Snouffer walked and stole second. Osborne grounded out moving Snouffer to 3rd and she scored on a wild pitch. Amber Kelly walked and stole a base but was not able to score as the Crush pitcher recorded the final out. Magic took the field and Osborne started off as she had ended her morning game by getting ahead of hitters and changing speeds. Unfortunately a Magic fielding miscue allowed the Crush leadoff hitter to reach base. The next hitter struck out, but reached on a dropped 3rd strike. A pop up to 1st base was the first out, but another strikeout couldn't be handled cleanly and the resulting dropped 3rd strike allowed the Crush to score 2 due to a throwing error by the Magic. Osborne then struck out a 3rd Crush batter, and the inning ended. The Crush were up 2-1. The Magic couldn't gain any traction in the 2nd inning and the score remained 2-1 as the Crush came to bat again. Osborne struck out the first Crush hitter before consecutive bunt singles put two on for Campbell. Osborne battled to hold the Crush without further damage striking out a batter and allowing a ground ball, but a fielding error again hurt the ladies of 10C Teal, and Campbell were in the lead 4-1. In the 3rd inning the Magic could not muster any offense and Campbell worked to start a rally. The first hitter grounded out to the pitcher. Then a base hit followed by another Magic fielding error put 2 Crush on. A ground ball to shortstop resulted in the 2nd out but once again the Magic fielders misplayed a ground ball and the Crush had scored two more runs making it 6-1. A final ground ball had Osborne out of the inning but the damage was done. Osborne set down the Crush in order in the 4th inning with Rachel Ice-Crespo making two excellent plays on defense for the Magic. Although the Magic had been defeated twice the spirits were high and Sunday elimination play would demonstrate just how determined the Magic were to finish strong!

Sunday elimination play started at 11:30am against the San Ramon Stompers. Savanna Smith took the ball pitching for the Magic and although she played with a heavy heart due to the passing of her grandfather, she joined her teammates in what would turn out to be one of the best days of the team's summer campaign. The Stompers challenged early with a base hit and 2 walks, but Smith was up to the early test and shut down the bases loaded threat. The Magic immediately stated their case when Ava Currie doubled and Smith clobbered a dramatic home run to left field, giving the Magic a 2-0 lead after 1 inning. In the 2nd inning the Stompers again loaded the bases on a Magic miscue and two walks. A base hit plated 1 for the Stompers but Smith then struck out the final two hitters and the threat was eliminated. Magic battled in the 2nd inning with a 2-1 lead, and the girls would not be denied. Sara Chiala singled to open the frame and Maddie Moore then hit a booming triple to score Chiala. Saylor Perez then singled to right field and knocked in another Magic run. Rachel An walked as did Ava Currie and the Magic were setup for another clutch swing of the bat by Savanna Smith. Smith hit another rocket, this time a 3-RBI double that put the Magic up 7-1. Lauren Osborne singled home Smith and the Magic had an 8-1 advantage. Osborne relieved Smith and pitched the 3rd inning for the Magic. She struck out the side in order and the Magic would not look back. For good measure the Magic scored single runs in the 4th and 5th innings when Moore walked and stole 2nd and 3rd base followed by a 3rd hit of the game from Smith who singled and scored after Osborne walked. Osborne struck out 2 more Stompers in her last inning and the Magic were off to face the Folsom Freedom in the semifinals.

The semifinals began with strong pitching by Savanna Smith and the Freedom pitchers as well with Smith striking out 2 in the 1st inning. A scoreless game moved into the 2nd inning when Folsom drew first blood scoring on a base hit and fielder's choice to go up 2-0. The Magic could not solve the Folsom pitcher and the game moved into the 3rd inning. With 1 out the Freedom hit consecutive doubles to score their 3rd run. A hit batter extended the uprising but Smith was able to end the threat on a line drive to Rachel Ice-Crespo. In the bottom of the 3rd inning the Magic trailed by 3 runs. But while down the kids were not ready to give up. Saylor Perez singled followed that up by stealing 2nd and 3rd. An RBI single by Ava Currie pushed across the Magic run and the inning ended with the Magic trailing 3-1. Lauren Osborne came in to pitch for the Magic in the 4th inning and quickly struck out 2 Freedom hitters and recording another out on a ground ball to Currie. The Magic were right back up to bat and suddenly the momentum was all in favor of the Teal. In one of their best innings of the tournament the Magic hitters completely turned the tables on Folsom in the 4th inning when Savanna Smith singled and Lauren Osborne walked. A walk to Amber Kelly had the bases full of Magic with no outs. Sara Chiala singled for the Magic driving in a run and Maddie Moore walked for another RBI. Then in her biggest at bat all summer, Saylor Perez lined a 2-RBI single to right field and the Magic were ahead 5-3. A dropped 3rd strike and great hustle by Currie allowed the Magic to squeeze across 2 more runs and the game was 7-3 in favor of the Magic. Osborne came out to pitch the 5th inning and a terrific catch and double play by Remi Snouffer to Amber Kelly secured 2 outs. A nasty change up by Osborne drew a called 3rd strike, securing the win as the game ended. Magic were on to the championship game facing a rematch against the Newark Dynamite.

Entering the late afternoon championship finals, Newark was reasonably confident having defeated the Magic in pool play by a wide margin. But they had not yet seen the best that Magic Teal had to offer. Savanna Smith was pitching for the Magic team, and while an early bloop hit enabled the Dynamite to score a run and go up 1-0, the Magic immediately answered in the bottom of the 1st. Ava Currie was hit by pitch, immediately then stealing 2nd. She was sacrificed to 3rd by Remi Snouffer and an error allowed Snouffer to reach. Savanna Smith singled and the Magic had a 2-1 lead. Magic threatened with more scoring when Rachel Ice-Crespo walked but the Magic had to settle for a 1 run advantage going to the 2nd inning. At that point Smith took over throwing well and striking out a Freedom hitter in both the 2nd and 3rd innings while allowing only a single base hit. The Magic tried to put an insurance run on the board in the 2nd when Maddie Moore singled and was moved to 3rd on a ground out. Currie walked and stole 2nd but with runners in scoring position and only 1 out the Magic inning ended when Remi Snouffer's line drive to right center field was caught. Remi was robbed but she would not be down for long!  The Magic again created an opportunity in the 3rd inning when Amber Kelly walked and moved to 3rd on consecutive steals. But she too was left on base and the game moved to the 4th inning with the Magic up 2-1. Now Savanna Smith was really locked in and she would not be stopped. Striking out the side in order in the 4th gave the Magic that little extra jump the team needed to bust the game wide open. In a battle for the ages between pitcher and hitter, Sara Chiala started the 4th inning by fouling off 7 pitches in all and working a base on balls from the Folsom pitcher.  The 11-pitch at bat was epic, and the Magic Teal drew strength from their catcher's amazing effort. Rachel An's clutch hit knocked in Cecilia Wolthausen who appeared as a pinch runner for Chiala. Ava Currie reached on an error, and that brought up Remi Snouffer who now had her chance at redemption. Snouffer lined a hard single to right center and drove in 2 huge insurance runs for her team, making the score 5-1 in favor of the Magic! An exciting shoestring catch and double play by Magic 3rd baseman Ava Currie allowed the team to avoid any late drama. The Magic players, coaches, and families went wild when Sara Chiala tagged out the Dynamite runner trying to score on a wild pitch. Magic victory was in hand by a final score of 5-2. The trophy celebration was sweet as Coach Brian "Boo" Chiala embraced Coach Greg Smith, the end of a difficult weekend but also a weekend filled with joy and wonderful moments too that will be remembered by all...

NorCal ASA Championships at Twin Creeks - June 24th, 25th, and 26th

An exciting weekend of softball started on Friday with 27 teams competing in the 10C division in the NorCal ASA Championships.  The Magic Teal were in action at noon facing the Slammers from San Mateo.  Over the years the Magic and Slammers have played numerous memorable games and this matchup was no different.  The Magic played well and battled the Slammers into the 4th inning with the score 2-0 in favor of San Mateo.  The Magic began the 4th inning with two hard ground balls but both Ava Currie and Lauren Osborne were unable to reach, bringing up Savanna Smith.  Smith, pitching very well and holding the Slammers in check, stepped up and ripped a single to left field.  She then stole two bases and scored on a throwing error by the Slammers catcher.  The Magic were down 1 and the game was hanging in the balance. A one-out walk and subsequent stolen base and single allowed the Slammers to get the run back and the game went into the 5th inning 3-1 in favor of San Mateo.  Unfortunately Magic bats were unable to take advantage of a walk and stolen base by Amber Kelly and the game moved to the bottom of the 5th still 3-1.  Smith went to full counts on two straight Slammers but a couple of fine at bats including a 12-pitch effort yielded walks, placing runners on 1st and 2nd.  A fielder's choice and beautiful running catch by Maddie Moore couldn't prevent the Slammers from plating 2 runs.  And with 2 outs the Slammers continued to apply pressure with 3 straight hits that produced the final runs of the game for San Mateo and a 7-2 score.  But the Magic were not going to quit by any means.  In the 6th inning the Magic's Rachel An walked and was forced at 2nd by a Currie ground out.  Lauren Osborne then lined a single to right followed by a base hit from Smith.  Unfortunately Magic could not generate any additional offense and the game ended in a loss.

Down but by no means defeated the Magic dealt with their tough draw by rallying hard on Saturday morning against a very capable Belmont squad.  The Magic started Savanna Smith and looked to immediately shake off Friday's loss in the 8am tilt.  Belmont gained an early advantage when the second hitter walked and advanced on a stolen base and subsequent fielding error.  Although the Magic were down 1-0 early, the team maintained its composure and started a 2nd inning rally when Remi Snouffer walked and proceeded to steal 2nd and 3rd base.  Rachel Ice-Crespo walked with 1 out and the Magic were in business.  A wild pitch allowed Snouffer to come home and the game was tied at 1-1.  Smith threw consecutive scoreless frames and the Magic jumped on the Belmont pitcher in the 3rd.  Ava Currie reached on an error and immediately stole 2nd.  Lauren Osborne walked and then a double steal put Magic runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Currie scored on a base hit by Smith and Osborne moved to 3rd.  With 2 outs the Magic were ahead by 1 run but needed a game changing moment.  Amber Kelly provided that moment with a blast to deep right center field that drove in both Osborne and Smith.  The booming triple coupled with a throwing error allowed Kelly to score on the play and the Magic were suddenly up by 4 runs leading 5-1.  The Magic continued to apply pressure with their bats in the 4th inning.  Sara Chiala was hit by a pitch and stole second base.  Currie walked and Osborne drove in Chiala with a single.  Smith then singled and the Magic were in great shape leading 7-2.  Belmont chipped away at the lead with 2 in their half of the fourth inning, but Magic Teal showed their fighting spirit with another rally in the 5th.  Kelly reached via an error and scored on a single by Rachel Ice-Crespo.  Ice-Crespo scored on a wild pitch and the Magic had an insurmountable lead with the final score 9-4.  Smith struck out 6 in recording the win and allowed only 1 base hit.

Magic Teal's excellent played setup a game at high noon versus the Redwood City Wicked.  Lauren Osborne took the ball for the Magic facing the second elimination game of the day.  She was up to the task in the first two innings striking out 3 and not allowing a hit.  The Magic were held in check early as well with the game scoreless into the third inning.  Osborne struck out the first Wicked batter; however, two fielding miscues by the Magic setup runners at 2nd and 3rd for the Wicked.  A fly ball that couldn't be tracked down produced a run and then a double to left scored two more.  Savanna Smith took over and recorded two outs to end the third but Magic Teal had to once again battle back from behind.  The team did just that in the 4th inning when Smith doubled and Osborne sacrificed her to third via a bunt.  Amber Kelly followed with a single driving in Smith, and she then stole 2nd base.  A Rachel Ice-Crespo single and stolen base had the Magic in business with runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Maddie Moore came through with a hard shot up the middle that rolled into deep right center, driving in both Magic runners.  Moore ended up on 3rd base with a triple and the game was tied 3-3.  In the top of the 5th inning Magic bats once again came alive as Savanna Smith ripped a 1-out double.  Osborne walked and then a double steal put runners on 2nd and 3rd base.  Ice-Crespo walked and then Magic runners Smith and Osborne scored on consecutive plays via a wild pitch and an error by the Wicked pitcher.  The 5-3 lead was short lived as Wicked hitters started the home half of the 5th inning with consecutive base hits.  Smith limited the damage, striking out the next batter; but a ground out and wild pitch plated 2 runs, and Redwood City pulled into a 5-5 tie.  None of the spectators were surprised when the Magic again showed their mettle in the 6th as Ava Currie singled with 1 out.  She stole 2nd and scored on a base hit by Smith giving the Magic a 6-5 lead with 3 outs to go.  Also a team that was not ready to give up, the Wicked put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out, reaching via a walk and Magic error.  The Wicked tied the game on a passed ball, but Smith struck out 2 straight Redwood City hitters to assure the game remained tied as time expired.  The nail biter went into international tie break at this point with Osborne on 2nd base to begin the 7th for the Magic.  A single by Kelly and subsequent walk by Ice-Crespo had the Magic with a run in and threatening for more.  The final Magic blows were struck by Maddie Moore and Saylor Perez.  Moore ripped a clutch double to left center that scored Kelly and the Magic were up 8-6.  Then on a great hustle play, Perez beat out a ground ball single to 1st base, driving in Moore with the 9th Magic run.  And as this seesaw affair demonstrated, the Magic would need every one of those 9 runs!  The Wicked were stonewalled by Smith and Kelly via two ground ball outs to the Magic 2nd baseman.  With 2 outs the Wicked appeared finished, yet a single and double followed and suddenly the game was 9-8 with the potential game tying Wicked runner standing only 60 feet from home plate.  As she'd done all season long, Smith was up to the challenge and avoided any late inning heroics by the Wicked.  A called strike three ended the game, and the Magic were on to face the South County Blaze at 6pm.  Magic Teal battled all day long and this win was highlighted not only by key offense but also a number of excellent defensive plays that assured a victory as Savanna Smith recorded the win in relief.

Game 3 on Saturday started late and finished at dusk under the lights at Twin Creeks.  The Magic started Savanna Smith, facing a South County Blaze team in round 3 of elimination games at the NorCal championship event.  Unfortunately the Magic Teal's long road back into contention was foiled by an early rally.  In the first Smith struck out the leadoff hitter but that player reached via dropped third strike.  An error allowed another base runner for the Blaze.  A double and base hit scored 3 runs and the Magic were quickly behind.  Smith struck out the number 5 hitter but the Blaze scored a 4th run as the Magic threw out the base runner attempting to steal.  The Magic worked hard to strike back with Remi Snouffer reaching via a base hit.  But two straight excellent fielding plays by the Blaze 2nd baseman stymied the Magic efforts.  Smith pitched great from that point for the Magic Teal as she struck out 5 Blaze hitters into the 5th inning and kept the game at 4-0.  Her teammates pushed across a run in the 4th inning when Rachel Ice-Crespo walked and stole 2 bases.  Maddie Moore walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch.  Magic was in the game at 5-1 as the top of the 5th began.  Smith faced the third place hitter for the Blaze.  On a 1-0 count the batter lined a ball up the middle that deflected slightly off Smith's glove but then struck her.  The Magic family was thrilled and relieved to learn that Smith was doing well and able to bravely shake off the line drive.  Lauren Osborne came in to pitch at that point in support of her teammate.  The initial hitter reached via walk and the Blaze moved up on a double steal placing Blaze runners at 2nd and 3rd.  Osborne struck out the next hitter but an error and fielder's choice plated 2 runs before Osborne could strike out the final Blaze hitter and end the inning.  At 7-1 the Magic were still within striking distance but needed a rally.  Nothing came of a Kelly base on balls in the 6th.  Osborne struck out the first batter in the 6th but a ground ball single and stolen base started a Blaze threat.  That opportunity was quickly stifled by Sara Chiala, the Magic catcher, who threw a strike to Ava Currie, nailing the Blaze runner attempting to steal 3rd base.  With 2 outs Osborne struck out the final Blaze hitter and the Magic had one more shot in the last of the 7th inning.  The Magic 7th inning began with a ground out, but Kiley Haberkorn walked and Currie reached via fielder's choice.  An error by the shortstop allowed Remi Snouffer to reach, and she was followed by a walk to Rachel An that loaded the bases.  Osborne knocked a single over the head of the 2nd baseman driving in 2 runs, pulling the Magic to 7-3.  With runners on 1st and 3rd the Magic had a chance but Kelly's hard hit ground ball in the hold at 2nd base was fielded and a close play at 1st ended the game.  The Magic finishing up their first NorCal championship event at 2-2, yet the results don't speak to the quality of play and the positive experience having to battle through 3 elimination bracket games.  Well done to all the Magic Teal players and coaches!

The Magic Teal faced a challenging bracket but played extremely well.  We are all happy and most relieved to know that every one of our Magic Teal players came away from the event healthy and looking forward to the next tournament in two weeks.  GO MAGIC!

Burlingame Billie Sue Tournament - June 18th and 19th

The Magic 10C Teal reached Sunday's semifinals round in the Burlingame Billie Sue Tournament, performing well again during an exciting tournament over Father's Day Weekend.

The Magic Teal played their sister team the Magic Silver on Sunday morning.  Both Magic teams are having strong summer seasons, and the Teal managed to pull out this game.

Below are pictures of the Magic 10C Teal and Silver together on Father's Day 2011 smiley

The Billie Sue Tournament began for the Magic Teal on Saturday morning with a game against the MVLA Nova.  The Magic jumped out to an early lead on singles by Ava Currie and Savanna Smith with Currie stealing two bases and scoring a run.  The Magic lead 1-0 into 2nd inning but Nova rallied on two walks and some aggressive base running, ultimately scoring 3 times for a 3-1 advantage.  Magic battled back in the 3rd with Currie and Lauren Osborne hitting singles followed by a double from Smith that scored Currie.  Osborne and Smith were stranded on the base paths, but the Magic trailed by only one run.  After a scoreless 4th inning the Magic had one more opportunity to rally from 4-2 down.  With one out Osborne singled to left center and stole 2nd.  Smith then singled and stole 2nd placing runners in scoring position.  But the Magic could not generate the one big base hit that might have tied the game and finished with a 4-2 defeat.  Smith pitched 4 innings, striking out 7 and allowing only 2 hits, continuing her high caliber pitching for the Magic.

Pool play game two was against the San Bruno Storm and Amber Kelly pitched for the Magic.  Kelly battled all afternoon against the Storm, doing her best work with runners on base to stifle San Bruno rallies.  She allowed 5 runs total and recorded the win with an 8-5 final score.  Magic hitters were lead by Savanna Smith who had a single and triple scoring twice.  Ava Currie, batting leadoff, reached on a walk and stole a base before scoring the first Magic run.  Maddie Moore had a walk and a run scored in the first inning, enabling the Magic to take a 3-2 lead.  In the second inning the Magic scored again with Remi Snouffer being hit by pitch and stealing both 2nd and 3rd base, scoring on a wild pitch for the 4th Magic tally.  It was the third inning when the Magic sealed the victory plating 4 more runs.  Osborne reached and was tripled home by Smith.  After Moore walked Rachel Ice-Crespo grounded to 2nd base and reached on an error, driving in Smith.  Saylor Perez hit an infield single to score Moore, followed by Sara Chiala's ground out that scored Ice-Crespo and the Magic never looked back.

In the final game of the hot afternoon the Magic faced the Foster City Flash.  The Magic played their best softball of the summer season defeating the Flash by a final score of 3-1.  Savanna Smith pitched the Magic through a quick top of the 1st with Lauren Osborne catching a line drive at shortstop for the inning's first out and Smith taking care of the next two batters, striking out Flash players.  After the 3-up, 3-down top of the first, Magic hitters immediately initiated the team's offensive attack with a base hit by Ava Currie and a line drive to left field for a single by Lauren Osborne.  Smith followed with a single to center field but Currie was out at home plate on an excellent defensive play by the Flash.  That momentary setback didn't stop the Magic.  The team would not be denied as Osborne scored on a base hit by Maddie Moore followed immediately by Smith scoring another run for the Magic making the game 2-0 Magic after an inning.  Smith never looked back striking out 2 more Flash in the second, third, and fourth innings while holding the opponent without a run.  The Magic rallied in the fourth inning on a 2-out walk by Isabelle Rieken.  Rieken immediately stole a base and moved to 3rd on a wild pitch.  Subsequent catchers interference allowed Currie to reach on a base hit with Rieken coming home for the 3rd Magic run.  Osborne then walked before the Magic ended the inning.  The damage had been done and the Magic Teal were up 3-0 with an inning left to play.  The Flash showed signs of life with a leadoff double but Osborne made a nice catch of a line drive for the inning's first out and Smith struck out the next hitter.  The game ended on a ground ball to Amber Kelly who threw out the Flash hitter at first base, locking down the win for Smith and her Magic teammates.

Savanna Smith was the starting pitcher for Sunday morning's elimination round game against the Teal's sister team the Magic 10C Silver.  Audrey Gunsky started for the Silver.  In the first inning, Ava Currie drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double by Smith.  Smith scored on successive wild pitches to plate the 2nd run of the inning and the Teal were ahead 2-0.  In the bottom of the first inning Smith pitched well recording two ground outs and a strikeout.  She continued pitching well allowing only 2 base hits and a single run in 5 innings, striking out 8 Silver hitters.  Meanwhile the Teal continued to apply pressure on offense with consecutive walks to Sara Chiala and Rachel An setting the stage for a second inning rally.  Currie singled in a run and stole second.  Lauren Osborne then lined to center field driving in 2 runs and the Magic were up 5-0 after two innings.  Rachel Ice-Crespo started the third inning with a double and scored on a ground out by Remi Snouffer pushing the score to 6-0.  The teal made it 8-0 in the fifth inning when Smith singled and went to second on a ground ball by Maddie Moore.  After wild pitches scored Smith and moved Moore to 3rd base, Amber Kelly singled to drive in a run.  The Magic Silver batters would not give up, as Eleni Bauman was hit by pitch and then Nicole Ventimiglia pinch ran, stealing 2 bases.  A single by Virginia Herr scored Ventimiglia.  However the Silver could not continue the late rally and the Teal moved into the semifinals.

Magic Teal then battled the the Flash from Foster City in a rematch from Saturday afternoon.  Magic hitters once again came out on fire with Ava Currie reaching base after being hit by pitch.  Lauren Osborne ripped a single to left center and then stole second.  Savanna Smith singled home Currie but Osborne was out attempting to score.  The Magic could not sustain the first inning fireworks offensively but lead 1-0.  Smith started for the Magic but found an inconsistent strike zone hard to master early on.  Two walks and a base hit plated 2 runs for the Flash and the score was 2-1 Flash after one.  Smith found her momentum in the second inning catching a popup and then striking out the next 2 Flash hitters.  But a dropped 3rd strike allowed the Flash to build a rally and ultimately score 3 times on a walk, single and subsequent Magic fielding mistake.  Smith struck out another Flash hitter but once again the batter reached on a dropped 3rd strike.  Magic Teal could not overcome fielding miscues and the Flash completed the win.

Although the Magic were not able to beat the Flash a second time in the tournament, the results wre still quite encouraging as the Magic Teal wrapped up the tournament in 3rd place.

Congratulations to the players and coaches for their excellent 3rd place finish on Father's Day!

Redwood City Summer Slam - June 11th and 12th

The Magic 10C Teal continued summer tournament play at the Summer Slam event in Redwood City reaching the tournament's semifinals.

The team played terrific softball in Redwood City going undefeated in pool play Saturday with 3 wins, earning the number 1 seed.  Highlights included Magic pitcher, Savanna Smith, throwing a no-hitter on Sunday and Magic pitcher, Lauren Osborne, tossing a 2-hitter Saturday evening.  Sara Chiala was a stalwart behind home plate, catching all 5 tournament games for the Magic!  The Magic bats came alive and the kids played stellar defense as the Magic outscored their first 4 opponents by a total of 47-8.  Standouts on defense included Rachel Ice-Crespo, Amber Kelly, Ava Currie, Sara Chiala, Savanna Smith and Lauren Osborne, each contributing to plays that included several runners thrown out at 2nd base as well as exceptional plays being made at 3rd base and home plate .

The Magic began bright and early Saturday morning with a strong effort against the San Carlos Force winning by a final score of 5-4.  Savanna Smith tossed a complete game in the victory.  Ava Currie opened the game with base hit and then stole 2nd and 3rd.  She came home on a base hit by Smith who later scored on an RBI single from Maddie Moore. Sara Chiala started a 2nd inning rally via walk and was singled to 3rd base by Remi Snouffer.  Snouffer was excellent all weekend long with the bat, scoring a run via Saylor Perez's ground out.  Magic hitters were patient and 3 walks began a 3rd inning that had the Magic scoring yet again for their final tally of the game, a run that assured the win.

The day continued at high noon with the Magic facing the Phantoms from Pleasanton.  The Magic tallied early and often as Amber Kelly started for the Magic and secured her first win of the summer season as the Magic took control and beat the Phantoms 17-1.  Kelly struck out 3 batters and allowed only a single run in the 2nd inning.  Savanna Smith finished up as the Magic won going away after 4 innings.  Hitting standouts included Isabelle Rieken with a single and 2 runs scored, Rachel An with 2 runs scored, Cece Wolthausen with a base hit and run scored, Saylor Perez with a base hit and 2 runs scored, Savanna Smith with a triple and single in 4 at bats.  Osborne contributed 2 walks and 2 runs scored while Rachel Ice-Crespo ripped a 2-run single and stole 4 bases while scoring a run.  Kelly had a perfect day at the plate reaching base 4 times and scoring 2 runs while Sara Chiala walked 3 times and added a run for her Magic team.  Magic play in the early afternoon set the tone for the day's final game.

A long day of softball action concluded on Saturday evening as the Magic played a 6pm contest against the Millbrae Mischief.  The Magic starting pitcher was Lauren Osborne, and she pitched her team to a convincing 15-3 win, striking out 8 while not allowing a walk.  Osborne went 4 innings in the complete game, recording the win.  Along the way Osborne helped her own cause booming a bases loaded triple to right center and lining a single up the middle that drove in 2 more for 5 RBI on the night.  The Magic swung the bats all evening long scoring 10 runs in the 1st inning with Savanna Smith doubling in 2 runs quickly followed by a mammoth ground rule double by Rachel Ice-Crespo that scored 2 more runs.  Cece Wolthausen then drove in a run before Ava Currie lined an RBI base hit.  The Magic continued the fireworks on offense with 5 more runs in the 3rd inning highlighted by a Remi Snouffer line drive and then Rachel Ice-Crespo's RBI single.  Isabelle Rieken scored for the Magic as did Rachel An, Amber Kelly, and Sara Chiala.  Nearly 13 hours at fields on Saturday earned the Magic a #1 seed for Sunday elimination round action.

Elimination play on Sunday opened with the Magic defeating the West Valley Slammers in 4 innings by a final of 10-0.  Savanna Smith was dominant in the performance firing a no-hitter, striking out 6 in the complete game.  Magic bats were ignited by a Maddie Moore single in the 2nd.  Rachel Ice-Crespo followed with a single and both Amber Kelly and Remi Snouffer walked with Snouffer recording the RBI.  Sara Chiala laid down a terrific bunt only to see the Slammers catcher make a strong play to record an out at home plate.  But the Magic were not to be denied as Cece Wolthausen walked for an RBI, followed by RBI singles from Ava Currie and Lauren Osborne to plate 2 more runs.  Savanna Smith drove in a run with a single before the inning ended on a bang-bang play at 3rd base.  Final Magic runs of the afternoon were scored in the 4th inning with Remi Snouffer leading off that frame by hitting a single.  Chiala, Wolthausen, and Currie all walked to set the table for Osborne who singled to drive in 2 runs.  Smith then singled in her final at bat to drive in the last Magic run of the ball game.

In the semifinals against MVLA Nova the Magic started Lauren Osborne.  An early walk and double followed by consecutive ground outs plated 2 for the Nova.  Osborne struck out a pair of Nova hitters in the 2nd inning but a walk and base hit drove home 1 more run and the Nova were ahead 3-0.  The Magic hitters lined out three times, hitting into some bad luck early, but the Nova pitching was strong and did not yield a run despite the pressure applied by the Magic.  The Magic defense faltered in the 3rd inning as two errors created another Nova run, and Magic Teal hopes of a second straight championship finals weekend were dashed.  Smith finished strong in the final 3 frames for the Magic as the Nova failed to score.  The Magic 10C Teal battled all weekend and ended the tournament with a record of 4-1.

Nipomo All Stars Tournament - June 4th and 5th

Competing in their 2nd tournament of the summer season, the Magic 10C Teal squad reached the championship game at the Nipomo All-Stars Tournament.

The girls battled some excellent competition and overcame difficult weather conditions with steady rain and high winds all weekend.  The Magic played tremendous softball with phenomenal pitching and solid defense coupled with an ever improving offense to win 3 games and tie 1 game before heading into the finals.

Tournament action began Saturday with Savanna Smith taking the ball against the Coast Riptide.  In a tight game the Magic battled to a tie with the final score 7-7.  The Magic came out firing on all cylinders with Ava Currie and Lauren Osborne reaching via base on balls.  Smith drove them in with a booming triple and came around to score on a base hit by Amber Kelly.  The Magic allowed 3 runs in the first 2 innings but jumped ahead by 3 in the 3rd inning when Osborne lead off with a walk and went to 3rd on a single by Smith.  Both runners came in on a clutch 2 RBI single by Kelly, her second hit of the game.  The Riptide answered with 2 runs in the 3rd to bring the score to 6-5.

Osborne relieved Smith in the 5th and allowed the Riptide to jump ahead 7-6 but the Magic rallied back when Smith was hit by a pitch and eventually driven home by Maddie Moore whose RBI ground out tied the game in the 5th inning.  The Magic pitchers were rock solid all weekend with Smith striking out 12 in the opening game to set the tone for her team.

In the second game of the tournament against the Santa Ynez Fireballs, Osborne started for the Magic and pitched 3 strong innings to notch the win.  She struck out 6 and allowed only a single unearned run for her first victory of the summer season.  Kelly finished up in the 4th inning as the Magic won comfortably by a final score of 14-6.

Currie had a single and double with 2 runs scored in the leadoff spot for the Magic while Smith continued to swing a hot bat, hitting a triple and double.  Rachel Ice-Crespo had a hit and 2 RBI while Sara Chiala boomed a long triple to drive in 2 more runs in the opening inning.  Isabelle Rieken walked 3 times, stole 3 bases and scored 3 runs for the Magic while Rachel An reached base twice and scored 2 runs.  Stacey Bobricken battled at the plate and in the field while Saylor Perez capped off the Magic scoring with a base hit and Remi Stouffer stole 2 bases and scored for the Magic.  It was an excellence performance in advance of Sunday elimination play.

Sunday morning opened with an 8am game under adverse conditions that included heavy rain, but the Magic never showed anything but determination and spirit as they dominated against the tournament host Nipomo Titans with a 15-0 win in 3 innings.  Savanna Smith was terrific in completing the shutout, not allowing a hit while striking out 7 Titans.  Lauren Osborne singled home 2 runs and walked twice scoring 2 more as the Magic took charge early.  Maddie Moore ripped a double to drive in 3 runs and both Saylor Perez and Cecilia Wolthausen scored key runs as the Magic pulled away.  Ice-Crespo lined a single into left center to score 2 runs and Snouffer aided the cause with a run scored as did Rachel An.

The second elimination game, played late morning against the 5-Cities club, proved to be a thrilling affair.  Smith once again took the ball for Coach Brian Chiala and proved to be more than up to the task.  The 5-Cities team scored 2 early runs and added 1 more in the 3rd, yet the Magic battled right back scoring once in the 1st inning and then 5 times in the 3rd inning to take a 6-3 lead.  The Magic hitters showed equal amounts of patience and aggression when Saylor Perez started the 3rd by drawing a walk then stealing second.  She scored on an RBI single from Ava Currie.  Currie scored on an RBI from Osborne and then Osborne came around to score when Smith grounded out to 3rd base.  The Magic ran themselves into two more runs during the rally with Ice-Crespo and Kelly both stealing 2 bases to setup the final tallies.

The kids from 5-Cities did not give up and mounted a 2-out, 2-run rally of their own in the 4th inning to pull within one.  Yet Smith stepped up when the pressure was greatest, striking out the first 2 hitters in the bottom of the 5th and finishing the game by fielding a bunt and throwing out the hitter at first base!  Smith finished with 11 strikeouts and the victory.

After 2 exciting wins the Magic faced the Coast Riptide in the championship game with Lauren Osborne making the start.  The tension was high and both sides traded early blows with the Riptide taking advantage of 2 hits and a Magic error to score twice in the 1st.  Yet the Magic showed their mettle by bouncing back with 2 runs of their own.  Currie singled to open the game and then stole 2nd.  Osborne ripped a base hit to center field and drove in Currie.  Then Osborne stolen 2nd and 3rd scoring via an RBI from Amber Kelly.

Osborne struck out 2 in the next inning and the Riptide went down in order.  The Magic also went down in order as the game quickly moved to the 3rd.  The Riptide's first batter reached on an error with Osborne then striking out the next player.  But 3 straight hits allowed the Riptide to plate 3 and take a 6-2 lead.  The Magic staged a rally in the 3rd with Currie leading off with another single.  But she was caught stealing.  Then Osborne singled and the Magic again had something going.  However, a nice play by the the Riptide 1st baseman stifled the Magic.

Osborne struck out 2 more in the 4th and retired 3 straight hitters to keep the game close.  Unfortunately the Magic could not generate any offense as the game moved to the 5th inning.  In the 5th Osborne struck out 2 more batters but a bloop single and a swinging bunt gave the Riptide life and they plated a run. The lead was 7-2 going into the 6th when Osborne shut down the Riptide on two nice plays from her shortstop, Savanna Smith, and a strikeout.

The Magic generated some momentum in the bottom of the 6th with a base hit by Smith and a subsequent throwing error by the shortstop.  Smith scored on a line drive to right center by Maddie Moore.  Moore was thrown out at 1st base but the RBI brought the game to 7-3 with the Magic still close.

In the 7th the Magic refused to give up when Kelly walked and then Remi Snouffer singled and that was followed up by a base hit from Cece Wolthausen.  Perez drove in a run on a ground out but that was the final run of the game.

Unfortunately the Magic could not come back, and the Riptide took the title.  Osborne finished with 11 strikeouts, walking only 1 Riptide hitter. Osborne pitched a complete game, the first of her career, and the Magic had no reason to hang their heads after an amazing weekend of great softball.  Big kudos to Sara Chiala who caught all but 2 innings of the entire tournament for the Magic, playing with great passion and energy behind the plate!

San Carlos Jan MacPherson Tournament - Memorial Day Weekend

The Magic 10C Teal team coached by Brian Chiala opened their summer travel season competition playing in San Carlos over the Memorial Day weekend.  The team played 6 games finishing a combined 4-1-1, a fantastic result that had the team playing in the semifinals on Monday morning.  It was a tremendous opening result and the team performed extremely well all weekend long.

The Magic opened with strong pitching performances by Savanna Smith and Lauren Osborne against the MVLA Nova.  Smith pitched 3 innings and Osborne followed with 2 scoreless innings to preserve a 2-2 tie result.

Saturday afternoon the Teal faced a team from Millbrae and scored 17 unanswered runs to win a 17-6 outcome and move it's opening day record to 1-0-1.  Every Magic player scored a run and it was a strong team victory in all phases with Amber Kelly the starting pitcher and Osborne used to close.

Early Sunday had the Magic facing a big team from Santa Clara the Sparks.  The Magic played aggressive softball and scored 11 runs to secure an 11-7 victory and finish pool play without a loss.  Again Smith started and recorded the win with Osborne wrapping up the final frame.

Later Sunday the Magic began elimination round bracket play with a tremendous pitching performance with Smith again starting and Osborne finishing a 12-0 shutout.  Defense and aggressive play once again created a positive outcome for the Magic as they moved deeper into the 14-team field.

The final Sunday game was a stellar performance by the Magic with Smith leading the way!  Smith pitched a complete game and ripped a 3-run homer to support her own cause in the win against a potent lineup from Foster City.  The Magic ran the bases to perfection and threw out the potential tying run at home plate on a play from Sara Chiala to Smith to complete the victory.  Chiala played superbly behind the plate all weekend, supporting her pitchers and teammates with fantastic defense that saw her throw a runner out stealing at 2nd base among other notable plays.

Outstanding plays were turned in defensively by Ava Currie who manned the hot corner to perfection and reached base safely in every at bat during Saturday and Sunday game action as the team's leadoff hitter.  Osborne lined a triple in the semifinal game and Maddie Moore lined several hard base hits.  Kelly showed off her power stroke while teammates Rachel Ice-Crespo, Remi Snouffer, Rachel An, Isabelle Reiken, Kiley Haberkorn, Ceci Wolthausen, Saylor Perez, and Stacey Boboricken all contributed with their bats and gloves in a wonderful team effort.

The Magic are off to a great start and continue to demonstrate the depth and quality of the Magic program in the 10U level.  Congratulations to all the 10C Teal players on an excellent opening event!
